"Mary looked at Kate, who shook her head in disbelief. Mary shrugged and walked toward the exit, smiling. She felt very good about what she had just done. After all, if you didn't call a pig a pig, it might never know it was one."
Second Street Station by Lawrence H. Levy is the Nancy Drew series for the mystery-starved adult. Only, instead of sweet, kind, Nancy Drew, we have the witty, bold Mary Handley. Honestly, when I first got this book, I was skeptical. It seemed very John Grisham-ish. I was TOTALLY wrong.
This book, while not quite a page-turner, certainly has the basics of one. Three or four mysteries begin separately and end up to be related. Loosley based on a real event and with big name characters like Thomas Edison, J.P. Morgan, and Nikola Tesla, this book is certainly worth your while.

Mary Handley is a brilliant woman born in the wrong time. Her mother has always wanted her to marry rich and settle down, but Mary has wanted to be anything but the typical housewife. As a 12-year-old girl she stumbled upon the scene of a murder and helped the coroner collect evidence, correcting him about the method of execution. Now she is a young woman toiling away in the sweatshops of the Golden Age America, awaiting the chance to fulfill her dreams. The chance comes when the assistant of Thomas Edison is murdered and the police station is forced to hire a female detective. Not surprisingly, Mary gets the job.
This book is a captivating read that will keep your mind in top-gear the whole way through. Follow Mary Handley as she overcomes sexism, corruption, and her own fears to chase the criminal who made history.
I received this book free from Blogging for Books in order to evaluate it, but I don't get paid :)
