Fanfiction, defined: fiction written by a fan of, and featuring characters from, a particular TV series, movie, etc. I've been reading fanfiction for over a decade and am an avid reader besides. Many turn their nose up at the idea of amateur writers dreaming up new ideas of characters they love, but I say don't knock it until you've tried it. Here's a list of my favorites from over the years, all Harry Potter, of course, and most feature everyone's (okay, maybe not, but definitely my) favorite heroine, Hermione Jean Granger.
Most of these (though not all!) are massive reads and rated mature for various reasons. I also haven't finished all of these, because I have no self control - if they end badly, no blaming me. Complete unless otherwise noted.

Draco and Hermione - I can't possibly list them all, but here are my top top.
- Rebuilding by Colubrina - Both Hermione and Draco return to Hogwarts after the battle to help rebuild. I particularly like that they work together in the library.
- The Eagle's Nest by HeartOfAspen - After the battle, all the students come back to Hogwarts and are resorted. Draco and Hermione are sorted into Ravenclaw (shocking). Super love the personalities of Draco's (previously) Slytherin friends in this one.
- Clean by olivieblake - I love when opposites are forced to work together, and that's the basic premise of this one when Slughorn makes Draco and Hermione partners for a long-term potions assignment.
- This Too Is Sacred by HeartOfAspen - WOW. I find the lore in this story absolutely fascinating. We find out Hermione is actually a pureblood and has to take part in an ~ancient ritual~ to find her perfect match. I'll let you guess who it is.
- Fall Through Time by Indieblue - I'm not much one for time travel but this is an exception. Draco and Hermione are sent back to Hogwarts and grow up with the Marauders, masquerading as James Potter's twin cousins, if memory serves. Bonus Remione for a bit!
- Manacled by SenLinYu - Voldemort wins, Harry dies. Hermione knows more than she can remember, thanks to her fractured mind. She is sent to Voldy's right-hand man, Draco, as a handmaid. Not for the faint of heart. It's over 350k words, and it will break your heart into a million pieces and you might not get it back together again. However, I still recommend it, as it is an absolute work of art. I cried, if you must know.
- The Right Thing To Do by lovesbitca8 - Just going to drop the summary because its so good: "She hadn't meant to look for him. Not in the corridors, not beneath the white sheets of the fallen, not on the way to the Chamber of Secrets with Ron, but she was a stupid girl."
Severus Snape and Hermione - do NOT come for me. Plenty of people date those 20 years their senior... maybe not that many, actually. Moving on.
- Bound to Him by georgesgurl117 - Fairly dark in the beginning, fair warning. Snape must bind Hermione to him at Voldemort's command, the story follows the aftermath of that. This is probably one of the best Snamione stories I've ever read; both Hermione and Snape are very in character, and I love how they learn to work together. Unfinished, but the author is on twitter and she keeps you updated on her progress!
- The Dark Lord's Daughter by Amanda Leigh - This story is so good and very out there for me. Bellatrix and Voldemort had a daughter and it's Hermione! She is captured and kept in the dungeons at Malfoy Manor. I particularly like the ethics in this story, Hermione has trouble deciding who truly is in the wrong - and it's not always obvious. Incomplete, sadly.
- The Gilded Cage by ApollinaV - Snape is in Azkaban, and Hermione decides to marry him as a result of the recently-passed marriage law, on account of prisoners not being allowed conjugal visits. A friendship grows between the two. This one is pretty light and funny.
- Care of Magical Creatures by mia madwyn - Hermione, faced with your typical marriage law situation, proposes to Snape to save her from becoming another death eater's bride. The author is very witty and this story made me laugh.
- Darkness and Silence by Kittenshift17 - I'm actually rereading this as we speak. Hermione patches Snape up when he returns from a death eater meeting, and a strange relationship begins. It's unfinished, because Kittenshift17 hasn't finished any of her amazing stories (still luv u tho).
This and That - some random recommends.
Now, that I've exposed to you all that I have nothing better to do than to read infinite fanfictions, let me recommend some authors. Obviously I give all of the above five stars, but some other rare talents are LJSummers, Indieblue, RZZMG, Canimal, DerLaCroix, blankfish, FreyaIshtar, and LissaDream. One of the best things about fanfiction is that there are tens of thousands of stories, and if you don't like one you just move along to another! That being said, I hope you find something to enjoy from my list.
Happy reading!
- Cauterize by Lady Altair - if you never read any other fanfiction you MUST read this one. It's a one-shot and it is a beautiful piece. After the war, Dennis Creevey picks up photography.
- The Bespoke Witch by gliterally - Hermione enters into a marriage pact with both of the Malfoys. Here's the author's summary: "AU, OOC and just a tad bit naughty." 'Nuff said. This story isn't on a fanfiction website but can be found on the author's site via the google.
- The Changeling by Annerb - An unusual pick for me, but Ginny getting sorted into Slytherin has a lure I could not resist. It follows her from the sorting all the way through the final battle, and she is a force to be reckoned with.
- A Silent Witness by MaryRoyale - I've never read anything quite like this story about a sentient Hogwarts. Be careful what you say - the wall have ears. No pairings and a oneshot.
- The Debt of Time by ShayaLonnie - one of the two time travel fics I actually like. Hermione is sent back in time to grow up with the marauders and they form an inseparable bond. Sirimione, Remione. It sounds unusual, but it's not one of the most popular fics for nothing!
